Members and staff of the Brooklyn Park Senior Activity Center celebrated its 15-year anniversary on Friday, Nov. 20. There to commemorate the event was County Executive Steve Schuh, members of the Area Agency on Aging Advisory Council and members of the Department of Aging and Disabilities.

Brooklyn Park Senior Activity Center started in the basement of the Brooklyn Park Library with only a few participants. As the membership grew, so did the need for additional space. In 2000, in partnership with Brooklyn Park Middle School, the doors of the current location were opened.

The first senior center located within a campus setting, the Brooklyn Park Senior Activity Center is attached to Brooklyn Park Middle School on the opposite side of the campus from the Chesapeake Arts Center. Located in northernmost Anne Arundel County, the center not only serves the Brooklyn Park community, but is also home to some very popular cultural events.

“Brooklyn Park Senior Activity Center has evolved into a multicultural, intergenerational facility and has become a model for Anne Arundel County,” said Schuh. “I am honored to have had the opportunity to recognize this center and its members for 15 years of hard work and dedication.”

“Like all seven of our senior centers throughout Anne Arundel County, this is a place for our county’s older adults to socialize, have a hot meal, take college classes and enjoy entertainment up to five days a week,” said Pamela Jordan, director of the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities. “We are grateful for all the fabulous members and volunteers that have assisted in making this center the gem it is today.”

The center is located at 202 Hammonds Lane in Brooklyn Park and is open to active adults age 55 and older from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. There is no charge to become a member of the center.
