Dr. R. Lynn Shumake founded the Blue Mountain Apothecary (http://bluemountainrx.com) 10 years ago. Recently renamed Blue Mountain Pharmacy and Nutrition Center “to better define what we are,” his Columbia location is Maryland’s only custom pharmacy specializing exclusively in compounding prescriptions with natural products.

“I was always interested in mixing and making,” said Shumake, holder of a degree in pharmacy from St. Louis College of Pharmacy and a residency in hospital pharmacy at Boston’s New England Medical Center. He also has extensive education in plant-based medicine and trained under a local herbalist.

Shumake makes pharmaceutical preparations from scratch, using the latest technologies from contemporary pharmacy science combined with traditional herbs and natural ingredients. He specializes in finding innovative ways of incorporating old recipes into modern preparations.

A range of reasons bring customers to Shumake. Patients with allergies or sensitivities to flavors, binding agents, fillers, preservatives or dyes may need to avoid regular pharmaceuticals. Other people may need medications that are not commercially available or available only in certain strengths. Blue Mountain’s unique dosage forms and flavorings also help some patients (especially pediatric and geriatric patients) better accept their medications.

Blue Mountain employs four people and has recently opened a new division to focus on sports medicines. “Nutrition is one of our heaviest areas,” said Shumake, “keeping people healthy and improving performance.”

alternative medicine is definitely the route to heal many diseases, I personally think that the only way to evolve and not lock ourselves in a fixed mold, is to innovate and find new solutions. My admiration to Dr. R. Lynn Shumake.
