Local Businesses And Organizations Grant Scholarships



The Columbia Foundation

The Columbia Foundation, Howard County's community foundation, recently awarded 10 scholarships:

AscendOne Scholarship Fund, established by Bernie Dancel, chief executive officer of AscendOne and his family, will help support students pursuing careers in computer science, finance or a related field. Winner: Joy Wan, Howard High School.

John C. Clegg Scholarship is a memorial scholarship that funds a book scholarship for long-time Howard County swim team members entering college. Winners: Jenny Prosen, Seton Keough High School; Rebecca Ann Pearl, Hammond High School; Demitrius R. McHugh, Long Reach High School; Laura Allen, Atholton High School; Lauranne Lanz, Oakland Mills High School; and Erica Pearson, Howard High School.

Robert J. Gaw Memorial Scholarship is intended for a student who exhibits a sense of passion about his or her career plans or interests. Winner: Juanjie (Joyce) Shen, Wilde Lake High School.

The Stillman Scholarship, established by an anonymous donor, goes towards tuition at a college or university for an academically outstanding Atholton High School student. Winner: Howard Fales, Atholton High School.

Stephanie Russel Memorial Scholarship is a $1,000 scholarship for a Howard County high school senior established by Steve Russel in memory of loving wife and mother Stephanie Russel. Winner: Michael Barron, River Hill High School.

Jeff Price Memorial Scholarship - A $500 scholarship made available in memory of Jeff Price by his widow Carolyn West Price, president of Impact Marketing, for a Howard County 4-H club member who is going on to college. Winner: Darla Dawn Bouma, Salisbury College.

Chick-fil-A Leadership Scholarship - 30-year-old program recognizing restaurant employees nationwide who excel in the areas of leadership, academics and community involvement with $1,000 scholarships. Winner: Brandon Moore, University of Maryland-College Park, employee at the Chick-fil-A restaurant at The Mall in Columbia.
