Laurel Nurses Commemorate Nurses Week
In celebration of National Nurses Week, on May 7 the nurses of Laurel Regional Hospital presented the hospital with a handcrafted quilt. Each square of the quilt was stenciled, stitched or painted by a nurse at the hospital. The quilt will hang on the second floor of the hospital.
National Nurses Week ran from May 6 to May 12, Florence Nightingale's birthday, and include Nurses Day on May 8.
Linwood Children's Center Under New Leadership
The board of directors of Linwood Children's Center, Inc., in Ellicott City, has announced the appointment of Bill Moss as executive director and Karen Spence as deputy director of the company.
Under new management, Linwood has expanded the scope of its services. In addition to providing educational, vocational and residential programs for children and adults with autism and related developmental disabilities, it has recently developed an after-school program, a summer program and a short-term on-site day and residential respite care service. Linwood also provides consultation services regarding autism.
Breath Of Fresh Air
For the 14th consecutive year, North Arundel Hospital, along with ENTAA Care, will sponsor Camp Airways, a week-long day camp for children with asthma.
Camp Airways is designed for children age six to 12. Under the supervision of North Arundel Hospital's pediatric nurses and respiratory therapists, the children learn how to live with and manage their asthma while participating in arts and crafts, swimming and other outdoor activities.
The camp will be held from August 5-9, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., at the Community Center in Severna Park. The cost is $70, with a limited number of scholarships available. Applications can be requested by calling North Arundel Hospital's Public Relations department at 410-787-4375.
Atlantic Builders Group To Renovate HCC Fitness Center
Atlantic Builders Group, of Baltimore, recently began renovations to the physical education complex of Howard Community College, in Columbia.
The renovations include a complete interior demolition and renovation of the athletic facility locker room. New mechanical, electric and plumbing systems will be installed through- out the complex as well as extensive mechanical upgrades made to the Olympic-sized pool.
State Grants Hospital New Status
Howard County General Hospital: A Member of Johns Hopkins Medicine has been designated a Level III+ Perinatal Referral Center by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems. As such, newborns needing intensive care or women diagnosed with a high-risk pregnancy may be transferred from other hospitals that do not offer the appropriate level of services for those conditions.
Howard County General Hospital offers 24-hour coverage by Johns Hopkins perinatologists and neonatologists.
Seniors Go For Stroll
On April 27, seniors and their families and friends headed to Centennial Park for the 1st Annual Senior Stroll/Fun Run in Howard County.
The grassroots event, orchestrated by the Coalition of Geriatric Services (COGS) partnered with Maryland Senior Olympics, was intended to promote physical fitness and its benefits to seniors, as well as commemorating the value placed on older Americans and their contributions to family and society.
