Everyone I know in Howard County realizes what a gem of an institution we have in Howard Community College (HCC), so it is no surprise that the college has received the highest award in Maryland for performance excellence. And, we are thrilled that this Salute to Howard Community College comes out just in time to make that announcement.

Community colleges' roles are gaining well-deserved respect, both in the educational community and from the public at large. As four-year institutions turn students away at an ever-increasing rate and as the cost of higher education grows even more rapidly, community colleges are rising to the occasion. Howard Community College is certainly leading the way and has become an accepted role model.

I have had the privilege of seeing HCC from several different perspectives - as a Howard County citizen, as a business owner and as a tuition-paying parent. In all respects, I couldn't be more pleased or impressed by another educational institution. And, especially from the check-writing side, I don't believe you can find a better "deal."

More Than Meets the Eye

The team that presented HCC with the U.S. Senate Productivity Award saw a view that many people do not - behind the scenes. It's an impressive sight, as well. When we met with members of the Howard Community College faculty and staff to discuss this Salute, the ideas flew, the creativity was overwhelming and the dedication was apparent.

These are people who are accustomed to, as is the popular phrase now, thinking outside of the box. They wanted this special insert to reflect that, and I believe we have succeeded - at least as much as it is possible to translate that enthusiasm and put it on paper.

What is obvious is that the college is not ready to take it easy and rest on its laurels. HCC created a Commission on the Future task force to help make sure it continues serving the community's needs (see page 7). It is now offering a couple of four-year programs, including a Culinary and Hospitality Management program (see page 10), and it has an award-winning international program (see page 11). HCC's technology programs are also on the leading edge (see page 13) and its Network System program is up to the National Security Agency's standard (see page 14).

Really, there is only one thing left to say: Congratulations, kudos and a job well done.
