Corridor Chamber Accolades Go To AACC, Dever Designs and PBS&J
The 45th Annual Gala of the Baltimore/Washington Corridor Chamber of Commerce drew more than 250 attendees. Following a Silent Auction and a fabulous feast, guests were treated to the infectious humor of comedian Frankie Pace. Then, award winners were honored for their dedication to the American spirit of free enterprise and community service.
Foundation Award of Excellence
Annually, the Baltimore/Washington Corridor Chamber Foundation recognizes an organization with an Award of Excellence. This year, Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) was recognized for its many accomplishments during recent years. Under the guidance of its president, Dr. Martha A. Smith, the overall growth of AACC in FY2000 topped out at 50,474 combined credit and non-credit registrants.
AACC has constructed the John A. Cade Center for Fine Arts, renovated science and gymnasium buildings and opened the Retail Skills Center at Arundel Mills. In 2001, AACC received the prestigious distinction of being named Community College of the Year by the National Alliance of Business. Dr. Smith, who is involved with civic and business organizations in Anne Arundel County and serves on many boards of directors, has also been recognized three times as one of Maryland's Top 100 Women by The Daily Record.
Small Business of
the Year
Having done work for many major national institutions and companies, Dever Designs has worked to provide creative strategic solutions and exceptional customer service to its clients for the past 16 years. During that time, the firm has garnered more than 350 awards from virtually every major national and international design competition.
Kay Rosberg and her husband Jeff Dever are active in many professional organizations including the Corridor Chamber's Membership Services Committee. Both have volunteered their time to offer seminars on graphic design, participated in career days at local high schools and universities and provided pro bono designs to needy organizations.
Large Business of the Year
Post, Buckley, Schuh & Jernigan (PBS&J), a nationally ranked, full-service consulting engineering firm, answered a call for help from the mathematics teachers participating in the Corridor Chamber Foundation's Annual Mathematics Symposium. The company, with 10 regional offices and nearly 2,800 employees, challenged 210 employees from the Beltsville office to come up with real world examples of mathematics in the workplace, to answer the question: "What do I need to learn math for, anyway?"
PBS&J employees responded with a 100+ page book called Real World Mathematics, which was showcased at the symposium and is lauded by the Maryland State Mathematics coordinator. Requests for copies have poured into the company's offices from both parents and students.
President's Award
Each year the staff of the Corridor Chamber presents the President's Award to both an individual and a company for their work on behalf of the membership. These awards were presented by Corridor Chamber President Walt Townshend on behalf of the entire BWCC staff.
This year's individual President's Award was presented to Mark Eskew of Heartland Payment Systems for his steadfast commitment to the members and his excellence in Membership Services through his work to make the Power Networking Breakfasts successful.
The President's Award for a company was presented to Bormel, Grice & Huyett, P.A. for its tireless work and multiple years of leadership to the Corridor Chamber Foundation, Annual Golf Tourney, Community Connections, Executive Committee, Human Resources Committee, Annual Holiday Mixer and many other activities of the Chamber and the Chamber Foundation.
Frank P. Casula Award for Transit Leadership
The late Frank P. Casula, mayor of the City of Laurel, was a strong proponent of public transportation in the Baltimore-Washington Corridor and a catalyst for the development of what is now the Corridor Transportation Corporation (CTC). To honor the tradition of leadership and support for transportation, the CTC Board of Directors recognized Anne Arundel County Executive Janet S. Owens and Howard County Executive James N. Robey with this inaugural award.
