COGS Director
The Coalition of Geriatric Services (COGS) has appointed Donna Chavers as its new executive director.
Chavers brings over 20 years of diverse experience in geriatrics, including work with The Philadelphia Corporation on Aging, Stephen Smith Geriatric Center, Presbyterian University of Pennsylvania Medical Center and Temple University Medical School.
HBAM Announces New Leadership
The Home Builders Association of Maryland (HBAM) announced the 2001 senior leadership at its 81st Annual Banquet.
New leaders include President Kevin Carney of Thomas Builders in Columbia. The Howard County Chair is Robert Scranton of Catonsville Homes in Ellicott City.
And among the Council Leaders are Remodelors Council President Mark Redman of Redman Structures in Clarksville, and Sales & Marketing Council President Jim Hunter of Wells Fargo Home Mortgage, Inc. in Columbia.
News From Classic Mortgage
Christopher G. Applegate, senior vice president and managing director of Classic Mortgage, a division of Farmers and Mechanics Bank, recently earned the designation of CMB, Certified Mortgage Banker, from the Mortgage Bankers Association of America.
Jay Porterfield has joined Classic Mortgage. He had been with Old Kent Mortgage which closed their local offices due to consolidation.
Howard Countys Employee of the Year
Tina Hackett won top honors from her peers in the county government when she was named Employee of the Year at the annual Employee Recognition Awards. As chief of Real Estate Services for the Department of Public Works, Hackett heads the division that handles matters ranging from the acquisition of property for a park or a building to filing of the property deed in the Howard County Courthouse. Her division reviews plans and prepares agreements for the countys entire infrastructure such as water and sewer lines, roads and storm drains. She was cited as a master at assembling the pieces of these complicated processes.
First place for the Great Ideas awards was won by John Zimmerman, Department of Fire and Rescue Services, who designed the Fast-Air Bag which has drawn national attention as a premier firefighter rescue tool. The apparatus allows a large amount of air to be quickly brought to trapped or injured firefighter.
Unsung heroes, praised for selfless service in crucial behind-the-scenes operations, are Lisa Hill of the Department of Planning and Zoning and Chris McNamara from the 911 Center, Bureau of Communications.
Customer Service awards for friendly and courteous service to the public or employees were received by Tim Cugle, Bureau of Highways, DPW; Carla James, Police Department; Betsy McMillion, DPW Customer Service, Jean Shea, Recreation and Parks; Dorothy Sinha, Citizen Services and the team of employees from the Cooksville Maintenance Shop.
Two Join CPAs
Michael K. Shelby, DPA, and Jocelyn Amy Sides, BA, have joined Cardoni Waddell, LLC, Certified Public Accountants and financial consultants.
Shelby, who has 13 years of public accounting and tax experience, is manager in Charge of Tax Services.
Sides, who had been in the field of education, will coordinate administrative activities of the firm.
Thomas President Of MGA
Virginia Thomas, MSW, ACSW, director of Community and Intergovernmental Relations at the Center for Health Program Development and Management at UMBC has been elected president-elect of the Maryland Gerontological Association.
Thomas is a long-time Columbia resident.
Wilson Named To Linwoods Board
Glenn L. Wilson, executive vice president of Citizens National Bank, has been appointed to the board of directors of Linwood Childrens Center.
Linwood ia a private, nonprofit treatment center that provides educational, vocational and residential services to children and adolescents with autism and pervasive development disorders.
Athen Joins Firm
The Events Organization, Ltd. is pleased to announce that Joan I. Athen is its new executive vice president.
She will be overseeing new sales and marketing efforts.
Paik Promoted
Joan Paik has been promoted to the position of events coordinator at Gallery 44 in Ellicott City.
She will continue to be the sales consultant and will also be in charge of planning all art shows and special events at the gallery.
Glick Publishes Cookbook
Ruth Glick has published her latest cookbook, Fabulous Lo-Carb Cuisine, with Light Street Press.
The former food editor of the Columbia Flier, Glick has authored or co-authored 13 cookbooks and has been a health/nutrition columnist.
ATS Hires Whaley
Tony Whaley, a telecommunications executive with over 20 years of experience in electronics and information telecommunications technology, has joined Applied Technology Solutions (ATS) as the director of Telecommunication Services.
Whaley will head the new ATS Telecommunications Services unit, which provides consulting, technology space design, cable plant design, and cable database management software implementation.
Horizon Foundation Announces
New Board
The Horizon Foundation of Howard County has announced that five new trustees have been elected to join the current 14-member board of the Foundation.
The newly elected trustees, all of whom are residents of Howard County, will begin their service to the Foundation in January of 2001. They are:
Steven Adler, currently serving as a board member on the Howard County Economic Development Authority and co-chair of the Route One Revitalization Committee, is a member of the The Columbia Foundation Board of Trustees.
Marianne Schmitt Hellauer, a partner with the law firm of Piper Marbury Rudnick & Wolfe LLP, is a trustee with The Columbia Foundation, The Howard County Conservancy, Inc. and the B & O Railroad Museum, Inc.
Malynda Hawes Madzel, president and founder of Custom Telemarketing, is an active member of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO), secretary of the board of The Columbia Foundation, and is a past president of the Howard County Chamber of Commerce.
James Robert McGowan, senior faculty associate and coordinator, School of Continuing Studies, Department of Teacher Development and Leadership, The Johns Hopkins University, was previously associate superintendent of Schools for Howard County.
David Nichols, MD, vice dean for Education and Professor of Anesthesiology/Critical Care Medicine and Pediatrics at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, is also director, Division of Pediatric Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine, The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Kaplan Executive VP At CareFirst
Leon Kaplan has been named executive vice president of Operations at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield.
He is responsible for claims and service, information technology and all government programs, and oversees operations including those at the companys Columbia Data Center.
